Filmmaker Lounge Competition

Film Independent will be producing the annual Los Angeles Film Festival June 13-23, 2013 at L.A. LIVE - Downtown, and has asked & to host a design + build competition for the Filmmaker Lounge, an indoor/outdoor space for various parties, panel discussion, as well as a place to call home for Filmmakers and select VIPs.

About the Los Angeles Film Festival

Now in its nineteenth year, the Los Angeles Film Festival is widely recognized as a world-class cinematic event, showcasing the best in new American and international cinema and providing the movie-loving publicwith access to some of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers, film industry professionals and emerging new talent by bringing them together in the heart of the entertainment capital of the world. From Drive to Brave, and from Beasts of the Southern Wild to Magic Mike, the Los Angeles Film Festival introduces audiences to the best of contemporary cinema.

The Festival features unique signature programs including the Filmmaker Retreat, Outdoor Screenings, intimate Poolside Chats, concerts, a Family Day, and more. Additionally, the Festival screens short films created by high school students and has a special sidebar of music videos.

The Los Angeles Film Festival is produced by Film Independent, a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization dedicated to promoting and supporting independent films and filmmakers. In addition to the Festival, Film Independent also produces the acclaimed Spirit Awards, honoring vanguard films that embody innovation and originality.

Our Aspiration

The goal of this competition is to identify a transcendant design experience for the Filmmaker Lounge. Emphasis on the word EXPERIENCE. Film Independent is seeking bold, creative, audacious ideas to augment a well conceived floor plan. Once a winner is announced in April, he or she will work closely with Film Independent to create an actionable scheme given true budgetary restraints and product that is being donated courtesy of our gracious Furniture & Furnishings Benefactors listed below. The Filmmaker Lounge will be constructed and assembled on June 11-13, 2013. Strike will take place on June 23, 2013.

Programmatic Requirements

  • 3x 10’ x 10' sponsor activation areas (e.g. Rolex showcasing newest watch collection)
  • 5x indoor multiple-seating clusters
  • 1x indoor bar w/ back bar
  • 1x 10’ x 10’ (minimum) alcohol storage area, preferably behind bar
  • 1x 8’ x 16’ x 12” stage w/ lights
  • 3x gated outdoor lounge seating clusters
  • 1x outdoor pop-up bar
  • 3x exterior furniture & furnishings pavilions

Submission Guidelines

Your submission must include: 1x Plan, 1x North-South Section, 1x East-West Section, 1x Rendering, 1x link on for your favorite product by each Manufacturer Benefactor listed below and a link to your Archinect Profile. Click here to set up your Archinect Profile if you don't yet have one.

Your submission should be a conceptual proposal of spatial layout and design using provided resources. Entries will be judged on the quality of your proposal and your portfolio & experience as indicated on your Archinect Profile.

Submissions to be emailed to before April 12, 2013 midnight on Tuesday, April 16th.


The winner will receive $1,800 in compensation for their design services once they've completed their realized scheme. Further, the winner will receive an Industry Badge to LA Film Festival. The winner's concept boards for the Filmmaker Lounge will be on display in the Filmmakers Lounge on Opening Night and throughout the festival.
